"Catfishing for Women by a Woman" by Jody Bentz
You maried the man of your dreams, and your husband is a
catfisherman. You grew up with a fisherman daddy, but you haven't
gone in years. You enjoy the outdoors, but want to take up
fishing as a new hobby. If you fit any part of these descriptions,
WELCOME to the world of CATFISHING!
As a woman, you may feel discouraged by the thought of
fishing gear, bait, and technique. Have no fear, because the
basics of catfishing are not beyond you. AS you could infer, the
first thing you will need is some gear. As a beginner, one pole
will suit you fine. Chose a rod of sturdy length (7ft or so) with
catfish action (a certain stiffness near your hands and a bit
of flexibility toward the tip) The reel you choose should accept
a wide range of line weights. A Spincast reel, (closed face) is
the best bet for a beginner, and with a little practice, a
baitcaster is best. Zebco 33 is traditionally the prefererence
for most closed face reel users. In addition to the rod and reel,
you will need line, swivels, hooks, weights, and bobbers.
Line can be monofilament or braided. Swivels and hooks can be
purchased together as leaders. An assortment of lead weights from
1/4oz to 2 oz in sinker, pyramid, and slip weights
is best. Three or four assorted bobbers round out the deal. A small
tackle box to organize your equipment and you will be ready to go.
If you are going to keep your fish, a nylon stringer for your catch
instead of the chain and hook style is best.
Bait choices are abundant. Live baits include worms, minnows,
goldfish, shad, etc. Dough baits, dip baits, punch baits, stink bait,
plastic worms, hotdogs, chicken liver, soapbait etc. are other options.
GIRLS, you CAN bait your own hook. Chose a bait based on your
preference and queasy factor. Hotdogs soaked in garlic overnight
or soap are cleanest for rod and reel. Put your bait on the hook as to
secure it as best as possible. You will develop your own style
eventually.
To start out, a small pond or tank that is stocked regularly
is your best beginner spot. Prep your gear, bait your hook, and cast.
When you feel a bite, pull back to set the hook, and reel in your
catch.
If it is within legal limit (12"+) and 10lbs or less insert stringer
through soft spot on lower jaw and exit through mouth. Over 10 lbs
should
be "CPR"ed (Catch, Photograph, Release) for propagation of species
and size. Harvest only what you plan to comsume, and waste not.
CONGRATULATIONS LADIES! You are a catfisherman.
