Lake Fork may be the “Bass Fishing Capital Of The World” but in my book the catfish reign supreme at Lake Fork. It’s a pretty good haul for me to get to Lake Fork from Fort Worth and I would have to pass a lot of really good lakes to get there but for years I would make the trek to East Texas for the Lake Fork catfish. While the bass fisherman were idling out of the marinas in the fifty thousand dollar glittery bass boats prepping forty different colors of spinner baits and crank baits I was idling along in my aluminum boat loading up on the lake for catfish.

Rod and reel fishing, fishing with trotlines and jug fishing was always good to me on this lake, especially for channel catfish.

Lake Fork is loaded with shallow timber and is packed full of channel catfish. It has a blue catfish population but we always stayed so busy catching boat loads of channel catfish that the blue catfish on this body of water always seemed irrelevant.

Catching the channel catfish with rod and reel was always a pretty easy task, almost like shooting fish in a barrel. Pull up in flooded timber in shallow water, grain a few holes with soured wheat or soured milo, and fish with catfish punch bait over and around these baited holes in the flooded timber. In the fall and winter there were always roosting cormorants so we would typically spend our fishing time in the water cormorant catfishing.

Catching the Lake Fork catfish with trotlines and juglines was just as easy also. We would typically set the trotlines or catfish jugs in flooded timber from eight to twelve feet deep and bait them with Redneck’s Catfish Bait Soap. Within a few hours we would typically have more than limits of channel catfish and would be releasing catfish after that.

While there is nothing wrong with bass fishing, you won’t ever catch me doing it. Next time you find yourself in East Texas, drop some lines in the water and target some of the Lake Fork Catfish and you might just be surprised at what you end up catching.

Chad designed and developed the Redneck Original Jugline and the Fish On Flagging Jugline through extensive research and testing in conjunction with his catfish bait, Redneck’s Catfish Bait Soap. These were the first Texas catfish juglines manufactured and sold in Texas using white closed cell polyethylene foam.

Since introduced there have been tens of thousands of the catfish jug sold online and through stores and they have are even so trusted that several state fish and game agencies have used them for their biologists, like Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

After Chad began manufacturing and selling these Texas catfish juglines he began getting questions by phone and email on a daily basis from other anglers who were trying to learn how to make their own “fishing noodles” and several others have attempted to duplicate the design and performance of his fishing juglines over the years without success.

if you are reading this page, it’s likely that you are looking for information on how to get started with Texas catfish juglines. Sure, there are some “copycat” plans online where others have attempted to duplicate the design and performance of Chad Ferguson’s catfish fishing jugs but they fall short in comparison. Chad spent extensive time researching and developing the design of his products to assure they worked perfectly.

Again, he has sold tens of thousands of these products to anglers all over the United States over the years. Throughout this time, he has never once had a return, nor has he ever had one of his products break. Let’s face it, at the end of the day do you want to follow the plans online from some pimply faced sixteen year old kid, or from the person who has been manufacturing and selling a superior product for years?

Because of the questions Chad has been receiving over the years, he has come to terms with the fact that while there is a huge population of people who want to buy manufactured juglines, there is a large group of people who enjoy making them on their own and want to tinker around with the process of making and building fishing jugs in their free time, when they are not catfishing.

Redneck’s Juglines are still available in stores, so you can call 817-625-0831 if you would like to order them. If your preference it to make your own catfish jug, then you have come to the right place.

Chad has written a book called How To Make The Best Catfish Jug For Jug Fishing. It is a fifty page e-book that walks you step by step through the process of making and building both of his famous jug fishing designs. Here are some highlights of what is covered in the book:

Materials list and exact information on what materials to use and where to buy them

The best sources for materials so you can save time and money

Where to buy white pool noodles, not really white pool noodles but the best white Texas legal foam for making these designs

Exact instructions on how to build each model

Step by step information including photos for every step of the process

Mythbusters to dispel the bad information the “copycats” are giving you

Why you shouldn’t be using swimming pool noodles with holes in them

Why you shouldn’t be gluing on pvc end caps like the “copycats” tell you

Why you shouldn’t be using rebar or threaded rod as a ballast in “flagging juglines” like the “copycats” tell you

These are just some of the highlights.

Chad is so confident in the information provided in this book that he is offering a money back guarantee. Buy the book, make your fishing jugs, and if after thirty days you are not 100% satisfied just contact him and he will refund your money IN FULL, no questions asked. It doesn’t get any better than that.

I did an impromptu interview the other day with a podcasting radio show based down in South Texas called Just Go Fishin about my guide service North Texas Catfish Guide Service.

I didn’t get to listen to the whole thing but skipped through bits and pieces of it and was impressed with the portions that I did hear (besides the fact that I said uhhhh… about thirty times in a few minutes).

He also has an interview with a couple of other guys as well. Stop by his website and check out the Giant Catfish show. It offers some good insight into my passion for catfishing.

Eagle Mountain Lake is located northwest of Fort Worth Texas (north of Lake Worth) in Tarrant County. While not known as one of the Texas hot spots like Lake Fork or some others, local Fort Worth anglers generally carry a pretty high opinion of Eagle Mountain Lake.

Eagle Mountain Lake is 8,738 acres with a maximum depth of 47 feet. It was impounded in 1932 and is controlled by the Tarrant Regional Water District and provides water supply for the city of Fort Worth and other cities in Tarrant County. The conservation pool is 649 ft and the water level generally fluctuates from 2 to 9 feet annually. Water is generally clear in the lower end near the dam and stained in the upper end of the lake where the Trinity River feeds.

Current Water Level

Eagle Mountain Lake Fishing

Eagle Mountain Lake has very little standing timber or aquatic vegetation, but does have an abundant supply of boat docks and other man made structure that provide cover and structure for catfish and all other species of fish.

Many parts of the lake have reed beds and can have flooded vegetation when the lake is at conservation pool. The lower end of the lake has many rocky points and bluffs which are popular fishing locations among many anglers.

Populations exist of Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Blue Catfish, Flathead Catfish, White Bass and Crappie. Due to it’s proximity to the city of Fort Worth it is a popular fishing destination and while it does receive a high degree of fishing pressure for Laregmouth Bass, the majority of anglers target White Bass and Catfish

Stocking History

Catfishing Opportunities

Channel catfish can be caught in many areas depending on time of year and pattern. One popular technique for catching channel catfish is chumming and fishing with prepared catfish baits like catfish punch bait. There are excellent numbers of channel catfish and provides and excellent opportunity for catfishing in the Fort Worth area.

Blue Catfish are present and there is a strong population. While again not known as one of the top destinations in Texas for Blue Catfish local anglers and guides have been very successful catching excellent numbers of Blue Catfish and also produce good numbers of Trophy Blue Catfish as well. Fishing with freshly caught baits like shad or fresh cut bait and targeting structure or drifting is a common technique used for catfishing here.

Flathead Catfish are present in good numbers and can be caught using rod and reel or setline fishing techniques (like trotlines or jug fishing). Fishermen are known for producing some very nice sized flathead catfish, especially during warmer months.

Boat Ramps and Marinas

Two private boat ramps and numerous privately owned marinas for launching boats and boat storage.

Bank Fishing Opportunities

Much of the shoreline is private property which can make it a difficult to find bank fishing opportunities but it is not impossible. Public fishing is available for a fee at Augies located on the South end near the dam. Additional opportunities exist for bank fishing at the city parks located on the Azle side, but due to shallow water fishing opportunity may be limited during certain times of the year. The West side has fishing opportunities at Indian Creek (for a fee) off Morris-Dido Road and also Creek Harbor Fish Camp off Morris Dido Road.

Lake Worth is a small 3,489 acre lake located within the city limits of Fort Worth. Lake Worth has a maximum depth of 22 feet. The lake was impounded in 1914. Much of the water is bordered on the East side by Jacksboro Highway and Loop 820 crosses the lake as well.

Consumption Advisory in effect

The conservation pool is 594 feet and has moderate fluctuations in water levels. The lake is generally light to moderately stained throughout the lake year round. The lake is controlled by the city of Fort Worth and a permit is required for operating a boat on the lake. These permits can be obtained through the management office at 7601 Cahoba Trail, Fort Worth Texas, 76135.

Current Lake Level

The lake has very little submerged vegetation. Large reed beds exist along shorelines in many areas of the lake and there are also rocky banks and points throughout some areas of the lake. Boat docks and standing timber are present in many parts of the lake.

Overall the water gets more shallow the further North you travel on the lake. Anglers fishing by boat should exercise caution especially when traveling North of the 199 Bridge as the water is generally shallow and is heavily timbered often at or below the water line.

Lake Worth Catshing

Lake Worth catfishing was very well known for many years to be an excellent, but in recent years has received little to no angling pressure. Many years ago a consumption ban was placed on the fish due to high levels of PCB’s and anglers are prohibited from keeping or eating fish from these waters.

The bad news is if you want to go fishing to keep catfish then this is not a good lake to choose for your fishing trip but if you are only after the thrill of the catch then fishing here is a great choice for you. The combination of it having good populations of fish in the past along with receiving very little fishing pressure due to the consumption ban makes it an excellent destination for fishing for many species of fish, especially catfish.

This area was known for years to be one of the top channel catfish destinations in North Texas, but it’s fame faded away with the implementation of the consumption ban.

Catfishing Opportunities

Catfishing is excellent for all species of catfish.

Channel Catfish, Blue Catfish and Flathead Catfish can be caught throughout using many common catfishing techniques. Fishing with prepared catfish baits in areas chummed with soured grain is a popular technique for channel catfish. Jug fishing and fishing with trotlines is a popular technique for fishing for flathead catfish, especially in the upper end of the lake. Blue catfish are commonly caught anchored in structure using fresh shad or cut bait.

Bank/Shore Fishing Opportunities

Much of the shorelines are accessible for bank fishing or shore fishing. Some of the more popular fishing areas are the areas around the Loop 820 bridge as much of this area is accessible by foot or even by car. The area surrounding Casino Beach park is also a very popular fishing location at certain times of the year. Anglers are restricted from fishing from land in the area managed by the Fort Worth Nature Center and fishing from this area is illegal. Anglers bank fishing in the upper end of the lake should exercise caution as this area is known to be occupied by alligators.
