First make sure you have a small tackle box that
is easy to get in and out of. These are available at just about any store
that sells fishing tackle and run anywhere from $10 to $50. Just about any
tackle box will do just make sure it has lots of compartments, that it stores
well so you do not have to worry about your tackle coming out. Make sure
it is easy to use. The last thing you want to do is fight with your tackle
box rather than fight with the the fish.
Once you have a tackle box you will need some terminal
tackle.
Terminal Tackle
You will need the following items at a minimum
to get started. Make sure you have a good assortment of each as well as
a good quantity. Remember you are going to be fishing on or near the bottom
for fish that when hooked, make a mad dash for the closest cover. One thing
that stands true is YOU WILL LOSE TACKLE. Nothing is worse than running
out of an essential item and having to cut your trip short.
Assortment of sinkers- Get a good assortment of Egg Sinkers, Bass Casting Sinkers and
Split Shot Sinkers. In the egg sinkers and bass casting sinkers you will
want to get anything from 1/2 oz to 1 oz depending on your own personal
preference. Get a good assorted package of split shot sinkers also with
lots of different sizes in it.
Swivels- You
will want some larger sized brass barrel swivels, some three way swivels,
and some snap on swivels. These are available at any tackle store.
Hooks- Hooks
are important. Get some good #4 and #6 treble hooks, and get good quantities
of each. You will also want some kahle hooks or "catfish hooks"
as many companies call them. Get some 1/0 and 2/0 kahle hooks.
Bobbers- Buy
a few bobbers in different sizes so you have them if you get into a situation
where you need to use them to keep your bait off the bottom. You may also
want to look at getting a couple of slip bobbers and bobber stops.
