P-Line Fishing Line

Submitted By: Bubba Guidry

Whatever you do, don't buy P-Line. Even if the salesman offers to throw in an all expense paid trip to Paradise for the purchase of one spool, that'd just be a trip I'd have to miss! That stuff's not worth the time it takes to read the box it comes in!

I went fishing with this line, and was far from impressed. To begin with, when spooling my reel the night before, I was able to bite through the line with ease....that told me a whole lot about its "abrasion resistance" right there. I took it fishing the next day, and after a few hours of breaking off here and there, and cutting and retying several times because of 'nicks' in the line, I decided to retire that reel for the day....I can't afford to lose all my tackle to underwater structure because my line can't remotely handle moderate pressure.....PRESSURE = what the "P" in P-Line evidently DOESN'T stand for. Later that day, as I was fishing, I decided to give it another try, as I believe in offering ALL able-bodied poles when catfishing....If I go into an explanation of the line's 'performace' on the catfish, I'd have to start taking blood pressure medicine! So I'll leave it at that. And YES I've catfished with other monos MANY times before, and YES, they all worked fine......except P-Line!

The box reads this....

P-Line's clear fluorescent CX Premium copolymer line is fluorocarbon coated delivering greater abrasion resistance (as compared to what!!??) , lower visibility in the water and higher visibility to the angler. Its low memory and extra limpness improves castability, and it's low stretch allows you to react quickly to the most subtle strikes. All this combines with incredible toughness to handle the worst situations fishing offers

So, judging from that last statement, I guess snagging a lure on a stump would be considered a catastrophic or a down-right unimaginable situation to the good folks at P-Line huh?

If you use it, have had success with it, and like it, well, that's great! I personally, won't be guilty of ever buying another spool of the stuff.

P-Line really stinks, worse than Trilene XT or XL, and I did not think anything could be worse than those lines.

CountryKatfishing Live Bait Rod

Submitted by Mike Covington

CountryKatfishing can be found at www.countrykatfishing.com

I received one of the CountryKat "Live Bait" Rods and have been using it for about three weeks now.

The rod is 7' long. I don't really know how to describe the action, because this is unlike any rod I've ever owned. The last 16" of the tip is soft as a ML action bass rod, but the first three feet of the backbone is stiff as any Ugly Stick or Cranking Stick I ever owned. In my opinion, for tight line fishing kitties, this is the finest action anyone could ever wish to use. They will move the tip twice as far as they will a MH bass rod tip, before they will have a clue.

I was immediately impressed with the rod construction. The rod blank has performed exactly as CountryKat said it would from day one. The handle is a cork wrap tape which I had never before seen, and it virtually stick to your hands, which is important after three or four slimy kitties!

At first the size of the rod (since this is a saltwater rod blank) concerned me. But, after using it with a reel mounted on it, I can tell you the overall weight and balance is light enough to hold in your hands all day. Unlike many other large saltwater E-Glass type rods I've used in the past.

All of this said is nice, but two things happened at the ACAT tournament this last Saturday on Richland-Chambers which really tells the story about this rod.

Because the rod is dang near twice the diameter right at the reel seat as most bass rods I have tried to us in the past, I experienced something it took just a bit to get used to, but when I did, it really gave me an advantage over the kitties. When a kitty would begin to suck on my punch bait. Long before there was any visible indication in the rod tip, there would be a tiny reverberation in the reel seat you could feel in your hand, like you were dragging the rod tip across a tile floor or something?? But, once I figured out this was always the pre-warning of a kitty about to take my bait, I would be ready the very moment the tip of the rod flexed to set the hook. Did I pull air a few times....sure I did. But, far fewer times than my partner.

Secondly, we were catching some fairly large channels. Anywhere from three up to four and a half pounds, and I had perhaps a foot or two at the most to horse them out of the structure before they could wrap us.

This is where the solid backbone in this rod really paid off. My partner who did not have a CountryKat rod experienced this at least twice in the same area where I had pulled several nice kitties from without getting wrapped even once. He and I were fishing the exact same water, using the exact same bait, and I commented to him about all I could attribute the disparity in the kitties we were catching was this CountryKat rod.

Send Jim an email and describe to him what you have always wished you could get in a rod. Sure he has some fairly expensive rods, but this rod is very reasonably priced for the performance I have already gotten out of it.

Bobber With a Brain

Submitted By: Chad Ferguson

Big Ten Tackle cen be found at www.bigtentackle.com

The bobber with a brain is marketed as the worlds first and only automatic slip bobber. I was a little leary of this product on initialing seeing the advertisement, and was still not convinced when I received it.

The first time I used the product however I was sold. The bobber works exactly as the manufacturer says it does, and is a great product.

It is a little awkward to cast at first but within two or three casts I had a comfort level with thr bobber. In fishing situations that warrant use of a slip bobber, I will use the bobber with a brain from this point forward. It eliminates the need to use a bobber stop as the bobber automatically sets to the appropriate depth you are fishing.

I have also used it at night with a light stick, and it was very easy to see during the dark night.

I would say this product is a must have for those that use slip bobbers on a regular basis and this is an essential for any bank fisherman. This product would have made my bank fishing days much easier because it greatly helps in keeping from getting snagged.

Maverick Trotline Holder

Submitted By Chad Ferguson

Last year I purchased a product that seemed like a simple enough idea but I was very unsure of, I figured for the price it was not that big of deal, so I went ahead and purchased a few.

The product is a trotline holder made by Maverick Manufacturing Company.

This is a small plastic tube that enables you to feed trotline hooks into it and then snap a cap on the end, keeping your trotline from getting tangled and messed up during transport.

I had always used a big piece of styrofoam to transport my trotlines but this little invention is my new tool for my trotlines, it wins the race hands down.

The best feature of this little invention is the ease in setting a trotline out. You tie one end up, pop the cap off the trotline holder and with a few quick bursts of the trolling motor your line is in the water easily and tangle free, It drastically cuts down on the time it takes to get a line in the water and eliminates tangles.

You can find the product on the internet through Maverick Manufacturing Company, the trotline holders run $3.50 each if you order two or more, and in my opinion, you will save that much time and frustration with tangled lines the first time you use them.

Bass Pro Shops Graphite Series Rods

Submitted By: Ron Jones of Fish Tales Guide Service

Looking for a Good Rod?

Then look no further than Bass Pro Shops. Several years back, I was
looking for some good cat rods at a reasonable price. That's a pretty
tall order in this day and time. The good folks at Bass Pro Shops have a
rod called the Graphite Series. They come in both casting , and spinning
rods. I chose four of the 7 foot medium heavy , and two of the 7 foot
heavy action rods. The medium heavy is rated to throw 3/8 to 1 1/2
ounces of lead . It is rated for 10 to 20 pound test line. ( I use 30 on
mine.)

I have found these rods to be of excellent quality , and very durable.

The Price? $ 24.95 ! You heard me right, $ 24.95 ! I have seen them on sale for $
19.99 !

Unfortunatly Bass Pro Shops has discontinued the heavy action rod. Oh!
you fish for those big Blues , or maybe mean , and nasty Flatheads in
cover ! No Problem !

They also have this in a 6' 3" muskie rod rated for 40 pound test and
up to 4 ounces of lead. It is the same $ 24.95 ! I have been using mine
for several years now. They have never let me down. If you are rod shopping
, I highly reccomend these rods. You won't go wrong with them. For those
of you who do not have a Bass Pro Shops in your back yard, have no fear.
They are in the catalog!

Good Fishing!
