Limb lines are fairly simply. Limb lines are used
primarily to go after monster flatheads.
Making a limb line basically consists of finding
a flexible tree branch that hangs over the water and tieing a braided nylon
line and hook on the end of it with bait.
Larger sized hooks are traditionally used with
limb lines and the bait used should be geared towards flathead cats (perch,
bluegill, large shad etc.). The bait should hang just at or below the surface
of the water.
It is a good idea to loop your knot about 10"
above the hook and tie it with a slip know, which gives the fish some room
to grab the bait and then run with it before it meets resistance, which
will help set the hook.
The bait is then hooked under the dorsal fin so
it will stay alive and the bait is kept at or just below the water level
so that it will splash around and make lots of noise attracting the flatheads.
You set your limblines out and check them periodically
as you would a jugline or trotline.
As with anything else, be responsible and don't
leave a big fish hanging on a limbline for extended periods of time, and
pull your bait and line when you are finished. Be sure to check local laws
and regulations regarding limb lines to make sure you are legal.
